Congratulations

That is the first thing I want to say before anything else. Congratulations! Whether this is your first baby, or your fifth, your world is about to change in the best way possible

As not only a newborn photographer, but also a mom of 2 kiddos, I understand the excitement and anticipation that comes with bringing your sweet bundle of joy into the studio for their first professional photoshoot. It's a momentous occasion, one that you'll cherish for years to come. To ensure your session goes smoothly and you capture those beautiful early moments perfectly, here's a handy guide for the day of the photoshoot:

Choose your newborn package

The first thing we want to make sure of is getting the right package for your wants and needs. Are you looking for a Newborn Family Session, a Newborn Studio Session, or would you like to get the best of both packages and bundle them together? I offer all three options, however in this blog I will only be talking about getting ready for the Studio package. If you would like more information on Newborn Family Sessions check out the blog below.

Schedule Your Newborn Photoshoot

The first step is to coordinate with me, your photographer, to set a date and time for the photoshoot. Ideally, we aim for within the first two weeks after your baby's birth when they're at their sleepiest and most flexible. This is also the ideal time because it is before babies start to get baby acne and cradle cap. I schedule all newborn sessions between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Babies are sleepiest in the beginning of the day and we want to be sure to catch them during that time.

Awake Window

Newborns have their own schedule, often revolving around sleep. However, it is very important to try to keep your baby awake for about 60-90 minutes before the shoot. This might seem challenging, but it can help keep your baby content and sleepy during the session. A warm bath followed by some gentle lotion can keep your little one comfortable and alert. Allowing your newborn to lay on your bed (on their back) and let them wiggle their arms and legs around will also help them stay awake, and giving them some "exercise" will help them sleep better during the shoot. During the drive to the studio, engage in some light chitchat to help keep your baby awake. But if they doze off in the car, don't worry—we'll work around it. I would rather them show up asleep from the car ride, than upset because they were woken up when they finally got to sleep.

Feed And Change Before Leaving Home

Before heading out, ensure your baby is fed and content. This helps streamline the photoshoot process, keeping it within the ideal time frame. If your baby is asleep upon arrival, we'll transition smoothly into the session. If awake, we'll top off their food before diving into the photoshoot. Don't forget to pack some extra formula or anything else you need to feed them, just in case. Most babies need at least one more feeding during the shoot or right after the session is done.

Pack Essential Items

I supply all wraps, props, blankets, and some outfits for the session, so don't worry about buying or bringing anything fancy for those. However I do suggest bringing at least two plain white onesies, one romper that covers both arms and legs, and three diapers. Along with wrapped outfits I like to get some shots with these items of clothing to put all focus on your sweet newborn just the way they are. If you have any other item you would like to have in the session feel free to bring it. Whether it is a special stuffy, a blanket, or anything else, I am always so happy to bring those items into some of the photos.

Relax and Enjoy

Finally, I want you to relax and enjoy this special time with your baby. These moments are fleeting, and my goal is to capture them in a way that you'll cherish for years to come. Whether this is your first baby, or your fifth, remember that every baby is different. The timeline of the session is also different, while some newborn sessions can be done within an hour, some babies need more breaks and mommy time and that is completely okay. When you book a newborn session with me my priority is only on you and your baby. Nothing else is on my mind and I want you to relax and enjoy it.

Final notes

  • My studio space is very small, only allowing room for me, your newborn, and mama. Please keep that in mind when booking. There isn't another area at my studio for other members to hang out. However, if the family does come along and are prepared to hang out for possibly 3 hours, there is a very small community park near my house.
  • Mama's, when you come please feel free to bring a book, magazine, your tablet, whatever you want to bring to have some relaxing time. Food and drinks are also allowed while your session in going on, just try to limit loud bags so that they don't wake up your baby. I have a comfortable spot for you to kick back and watch, read, or even nap while the session is going on. I also have water, soda, coffee, and tea for mamas. I know how hard it is those first few weeks, adjusting to a new baby is so amazing, and so tiring, so I want this to be the place you come for a few hours just to breathe.
  • When you schedule your newborn session we try to stick with that date/time. however we all know babies have minds of their own with when they enter this world. I am always able to switch times/dates around, so never worry about booking and then losing your spot for unexpected reasons.
